By Alexander Quinn Nichol

We currently have 997 subscribers. Yesterday we had 994. At this rate we will have 1000 subscribers within the next two days. We think that this calls for a celebration, but we aren't sure what it may be yet. Anyway, we are proud that we have accomplished such an impressive number of subscribers for a Just Computer YouTube channel.

We thank all 1000 people that made this possible. So thank you.

Macheads101 Rejected From App Store
By Alexander Quinn Nichol

The Macheads101 application was rejected from the app store for two main reasons:

1. The icon had the apple logo in it
2. When the device that the app was running on was not connected to the internet, the app looked like it was empty and crippled.

We have submitted a new version that fixed these features and hope that it will be on the store by the end of next weak.

Rumors for Apples Next iPhone
By Alexander Quinn Nichol

The discovery that Apple's next iPhone might contain both video input as well as a magnetometer (digital compass) opens up some interesting possibilities for future iPhone applications.

Over at TouchArcade, game researcher Blair MacIntyre demonstrated an example of an Augmented Reality application that was in testing on the iPhone. Augmented Reality is described as a combination of real-world and computer-generated data, where computer graphics objects are blended into video footage in real time.

A more sophisticated example of a Zombie shooter was also shown using non-iPhone hardware. Due to a current lack of SDK video support, these apps would not be allowed in the App Store at this time, but both of these would be possible on the new iPhone if the rumors hold true.

The inclusion of a magnetometer (Digital Compass) will also introduce a number of new possibilities. Unlike accelerometers, a 3-axis magnetometer can determine absolute position. A Nokia blog post details what this could mean:

A traditional compass only works when it is held horizontally. As Paul Coulton recently described in his Forum Nokia Blogs posting, the Nokia 6210 includes a 3-axis magnetometer. Through some calculations, it is possible to find out the absolute direction in which the phone is facing, no matter how the phone is oriented.

Examples of how this could be used include pointing your iPhone's camera at a building and the phone telling you what building it is by combining GPS, accelerometer and compass information. The iPhone could even overlay graphics and text on top of the image to provide additional information. Another application described is the ability to show information about stars and constellations simply by pointing your iPhone towards the sky.

Such an application is not possible with the current iPhone's accelerometers alone.

Skype For The iPhone
By Alexander Quinn Nichol

There is now skype for the iPhone. Read a little farther and you'll see why I made this article
The release of an official Skype application for the iPhone appears to have been controversial for both mobile carriers and consumers. The Voice-Over-IP software allows iPhone users to make phone calls over Wi-Fi to other Skype users or even to regular landline phones. Obviously, such functionality could compete with mobile carrier's own voice services.

As a concession, Apple has prevented the use of such applications over cellular data networks (EDGE or 3G) and only officially allows it to run on Wi-Fi. (Strangely, several readers have noticed that the Skype application presently does work over 3G when running beta iPhone 3.0 firmware, but that may simply be an oversight on the part of Apple.)

T-Mobile in Germany, however, threatened that it may take action to prevent its customers from using Skype on the iPhone. On the flip side, an open-Internet advocacy group is asking the FCC to see if AT&T and Apple are violating federal rules by restricting Skype to just Wi-Fi.

Tethering on 3.0
By Jon Loeb

There is now support for tethering in the 3.0 beta.
It is accessible via a hidden preference pane that some Hackers managed to unhide and get working on certain 3g networks such as AT&T in the US

we have successfully tested this out and it does work and will be making a macheads101 video on this shortly
